Surface Graphics

Working on anything from prints to textiles, products or any other surface, I create graphics that are inseparable from the material they apply to. Every work builds upon research on the tradition behind each artefact and on the people that will be using it.

The results are designs that go beyond a decorative expression, and that are instead a celebration of the medium’s unique stories.

Experimental Typography

It’s rare now to receive a handwritten letter declaring undying love, or a hastily jotted postcard from a tropical vacation. We simply don’t write so much anymore. But what if writing in a new language didn’t require knowing how to write the letters?

I challenge the possibility of letters as an expression, by designing typography to deliver things beyond its literal meaning.

Crafted Identity

You need to find a common ground in order to create mutual interest. Sometimes using metaphor is effective to get the sympathy of the other person.

I use the same subtle approach when creating a visual identity. Understanding and analysing a personal idea, I reinterpret it in context to which the audience can relate.

Lemon Hotel is an art installation/accommodation at Setouchi Triennale produced by Smiles Co., Ltd.

Setouchi Triennale is an international art festival held on several islands in the Seto Inland Sea of Japan. The festival invites artists from both Japan and overseas, many of whom make use of abandoned homes to host their art installations.

The challenge was to create a symbol that strikes a chord with both national and international visitors. The result is a bilingual typography whose Japanese scripts are modelled after Western cursive form. Its incomplete lines suggest a shape of lemon in a response to the concept of the installation celebrating the pure and sour taste of distant memories.
